Adela Stone

About:

Adela is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who graduated with an MA in Clinical Counseling. She also has a Master’s degree in Journalism which she received in Europe where she is from. She speaks three languages and understands the need to tailor therapy based on cultural backgrounds.

Her experience as an immigrant helps Adela to empathize with her client’s life challenges, and her early parental and spousal losses enable her to connect with others in mourning. It has also boosted her resilience and given her a worldview atypical for her age. She has gone through a big marital challenge herself during her current second marriage and has undergone couples therapy. She is now a part of a blended family which enables her to understand some of the tricky dynamics of step parenting.

COUPLES STRUGGLING WITH GRIEF: One of Adela's main areas of focus are grief (including complicated and disenfranchised grief), loss, existential concerns, life adjustments, sexuality and trauma. She welcomes humor, sarcasm and irreverent communication in sessions if that helps a client experience catharsis.

Adela is aware that everyone grieves differently and that grief can be a point of contention for a couple or family. But a loss isn’t always about death. You may be experiencing loss related to health problems, marital or other familial conflicts. Adela can help support you through any and all losses.

SEXUAL CONNECTION: Adela welcomes and encourages sexuality-related concerns as they can often be glossed over throughout our lives due to religious upbringing, multigenerational patterns, sexual abuse, etc.

She believes that sexuality is a big part of our overall wellbeing and yet it is often neglected or ignored in therapy. She is a sex-positive and kink-allied counselor who isn’t afraid of broaching the subject of sex life. In fact, she encourages and welcomes it without pushing. Despite death and sex being two of the most fundamental and important aspects of our lives, neither receives the attention they deserve. Adela’s mission is to remedy that and help remove stigma.

NEURODIVERSE COUPLES: Adela is aware of the fact that neurology matters and recognizes that in the case of a neurodiverse couple, it is important to view a partnership through a different lens; one that may include focusing on:

  • better understanding and acceptance,

  • developing new coping strategies,

  • addressing social anxiety,

  • struggle with change,

  • sensory issues, and or

  • difficulties with emotional and physical intimacy.

CO-PARENTING: Co-parenting therapy with Adela is designed to help parents put their anger and hurt aside, and move forward in a civil way for the wellbeing of their children. Rather than being driven by the wounds of the past, Adela will make therapy a safe place so you can restore some balance in your lives and return your focus to being the best parents possible given the current challenges. In co-parenting sessions, the couple will usually concentrate on three main areas – reducing parental conflict, improving communication between parents and kids, and implementing helpful parenting strategies.
